Victorian Spring-Loaded Lacemaker’s Reading Candle Lamp, English c.1890

A fascinating late Victorian spring-loaded lacemaker’s or reader’s candle lamp, English and dating to circa 1890. A beautifully patinated example in superb condition, retaining its working spring mechanism.

Full Description

Dating to circa 1890, this unusual English candle lamp was designed to provide a practical and consistent source of light for close work such as lace making and reading.

The clever spring-loaded design raises the candle as it burns, helping to maintain the flame at a useful height. The spring mechanism on this example remains in working order.

Its utilitarian construction has developed a lovely patina through age and use, giving the lamp considerable character while retaining the ingenuity of its original design.

Now an increasingly unusual piece of Victorian lighting and social history, it has particular appeal as an antique lacemaker’s lamp, reading candle lamp or collectable example of 19th century domestic lighting.

A superb decorative object in its own right, combining functional Victorian design, mechanical interest and a beautifully aged surface.
