A fabulous English glazed scratch cupboard dating to circa 1820, retaining its original painted finish with a wonderfully worn and scratched-back surface. A highly characterful piece of early 19th century English folk art.

Full Description

Dating to circa 1820, this antique English scratch cupboard has a glazed front and retains its original painted finish, now beautifully worn and scratched back through generations of use.

It is the surface that gives this cupboard much of its appeal. The layers of age and wear have created a wonderfully authentic finish that cannot easily be replicated, giving the piece a strong folk art quality and considerable decorative character.

The cupboard stands on small turned feet, allowing it to be used as a freestanding piece, while it can also be wall mounted where space requires.

At just 22 cm deep, it is particularly versatile for displaying and storing smaller objects without projecting heavily into a room.

A fabulous survivor of early 19th century English vernacular furniture, combining practical storage with original paint, honest wear and the individuality that makes antique folk art furniture so appealing.
