Full Description

A wonderfully characterful Chinese elm stool dating from circa 1900, retaining its original lacquered painted finish and displaying the beautifully aged surface that makes traditional Chinese country furniture so appealing.

Constructed in elm, the stool features a gently shaped saddle-style seat supported by four splayed legs with connecting stretchers. The simple, practical construction gives the piece a strong architectural quality, while its proportions and understated form reflect the functional craftsmanship of traditional Chinese furniture.

The original painted lacquer has developed a particularly attractive patina, with areas of natural wear revealing the timber beneath. The combination of mellow yellow-green tones, exposed wood and a richly textured surface creates a wonderfully decorative appearance that would be difficult to replicate.

Originally conceived as a practical everyday stool, its sculptural form and compact footprint make it exceptionally versatile within a modern home. Equally useful as occasional seating, a bedside table or a small display stand, it brings warmth, texture and individuality to an interior.

A lovely example of antique Chinese vernacular furniture, combining honest construction, original decoration and the understated beauty of a well-used domestic object.
