Brief Historical Note

At the turn of the 20th century, granite was widely used in Scotland for civic, industrial, and maritime architecture, particularly in port cities such as Aberdeen, known as the “Granite City.” Gate post finials like these served both a decorative and symbolic role, marking entrances and lending authority and finish to dockyards, estates, and public buildings.

Originally positioned at the old Aberdeen docks, these finials would have formed part of the robust infrastructure supporting Scotland’s maritime trade. Today, they stand as sculptural remnants of industrial heritage, valued for their craftsmanship, durability, and historic character.
