18th Century French Painted Serpentine Commode — Walnut & Ormolu
A handsome French 18th-century two-drawer serpentine commode, constructed in walnut and retaining its original ormolu hardware. The commode has subsequently been given a decorative blue painted finish, creating an attractive contrast between its elegant period form and more contemporary colour.
Full Description
A beautifully proportioned French 18th-century serpentine commode, constructed in walnut and featuring the elegant bombe and serpentine form characteristic of fine French furniture of the period.
The commode is arranged with two generously sized drawers, each retaining its decorative ormolu hardware, which provides a rich contrast to the later blue painted finish. The shaped front and serpentine outline give the piece a particularly graceful appearance, while the compact proportions make it highly versatile within a modern interior.
The walnut construction and surviving period form provide an authentic foundation, while the later blue paint adds a fresh decorative quality and allows the commode to sit comfortably within both traditional and more eclectic schemes. The combination of antique French craftsmanship, curved lines and ornate gilt-metal hardware makes this an especially attractive decorative piece.
A wonderful example of 18th-century French furniture, offering the elegant proportions and decorative character associated with the period while the later painted finish gives it a distinctive and highly usable appearance.
